Bournemouth Pleasure Gardens: Introduction

Immediately behind Bournemouth Pier lies Bournemouth Pleasure Gardens, a stretch of beautiful, well cared for parkland about two miles in length. Bournemouth gardens are centered around the small river Bourne that bubbles its way to the sea through the middle. Almost all of the river way is channelled but this does not detract from its charm.

The gardens are divided into three separate stretches. The Lower Gardens, near the Pier, the Central Gardens which are the landward side of Bournemouth square and the Upper gardens, which are beyond the Central gardens and are about a mile from the sea. Originally laid out by the Victorians, the gardens have continued to evolve and enhance their breathtaking abundance for rare and beautiful plant species.
